Amazon Web Services (AWS) Snowball is a physical device that you can use to transfer large amounts of data into and out of the AWS Cloud. It is designed for customers who need to transfer large amounts of data in or out of the AWS Cloud, but do not have the bandwidth or connectivity to do so over the Internet.
Here is an example of how you might use Snowball:
Imagine that you have a large number of files stored on your local computer or on-premises storage that you want to transfer to the AWS Cloud. You can use Snowball to transfer this data to the AWS Cloud by doing the following:
1. Request a Snowball from AWS: You can request a Snowball through the AWS Management Console or using the AWS Snowball API. You will need to specify the size of the Snowball (50 TB or 80 TB) and the location where you want the Snowball shipped.
2. Receive the Snowball: When the Snowball is shipped to you, you will receive it in a secure container that includes all the necessary cables and instructions for transferring data.
3. Transfer data to the Snowball: Using the cables and instructions provided, you can connect the Snowball to your local computer or storage device and transfer the data to the Snowball.
4. Ship the Snowball back to AWS: Once the data transfer is complete, you can ship the Snowball back to AWS using the prepaid shipping label and packaging materials provided.
5. Transfer data to the AWS Cloud: Once the Snowball arrives at the AWS facility, the data is transferred to your specified S3 bucket or exported to Amazon EBS snapshot.
AWS Snowball is a cost-effective and secure way to transfer large amounts of data to the AWS Cloud, especially if you do not have the bandwidth or connectivity to do so over the Internet.
